Blog: Animals in the Military

SouthPaw Animal Clinic

When it comes to animals being used in the military, there are quite a few different species of animals that have been enlisted.  Dogs, pigs, horses, camels, elephants, chickens, turkeys, pigeons, rats, dolphins, and sea lions are just a few of the many animals that have aided military efforts.

Throughout history, and even into our modern day, animals have served a variety of functions in the military.  These functions include transportation, messenger, espionage, search and rescue, companion and morale booster.  Animals have been used to detect bombs and noxious gases, locate snipers, signal to trip wires, and recover objects.  Animals have also served as therapy and sources of comfort for our military after their service.

Without the hard work and sacrifice of our military and the animals that work alongside them, we would not have the freedoms that we so gratefully cherish. Thank you to all of our veterans for your service.
